Great gameplay, the story left a bitter taste in my mouth.īasically, instead of 4 hours of cutscenes with powerpoint presentations trying to explain the story like MGS4 did, they added cassette tapes so you can listen to the story instead haha.but my problem is that most of the time i just got lost because i was trying to listen to the cassette tapes AND play the game so i ended up giving up on listening to them. Also as a fair warning, the first 30-45 minutes of the game are completely different from what the rest of the game will be (as in it actually feels like a proper MGS game). If you're like me you can overlook the weak story and just have a ton of fun with the gameplay. The biggest positive I will say about the story, however, is that it does come full circle and tie into the original MSX game in a meaningful way, even if the end result was a little rushed.ĭefinitely give it a shot. Also, Ocelot is voiced by Troy Baker, who in my opinion has gotten so stale after being in so many games, that nothing about Ocelot feels like the character we've come to know from the rest of the series. I think there was an ongoing debate around launch if this was a creative decision or budgetary as Keifer was probably expensive to cast. Big Boss has very little dialogue and is so awkwardly quiet sometimes. I like Keifer as well, and he does fine in this, but he's not an equal replacement for David. It's very bare bones compared to the other games, and there's a whole end chapter that never got made due to Kojima's falling out with Konami. Unlike some of the older games, there's really no 'wrong' way to play it. You can get pretty creative with how you approach missions, and you can choose to be as stealthy or loud as you want. It's easily the worst Metal Gear in terms of story, memorable bosses, etc (staples of the series), but I find it to easily be the best when it comes to gameplay. It's the most polarizing game of the series.
